Anti-Hunger Policy Conference 2023:
Loaves & Fishes/Friendship Trays begun delivering groceries to neighbors in April 2020 and has delivered to over 48,000 individuals, almost half of which are children and seniors, across Charlotte-Mecklenburg that are unable to pick up from a pantry due to health or transportation barriers. Loaves & Fishes/Friendship Trays launched a new online grocery ordering platform in 2022 in partnership with Instacart. Through this new grocery ordering website, families and individuals who face food insecurity in Charlotte-Mecklenburg are able to choose the nutritious foods their families love and have them delivered directly to their door. This session will highlight this program.

The Military Family Advisory Network (MFAN) envisions a world where all military-connected families are empowered to thrive. MFAN’s mission is to understand and amplify the needs of military-connected families and inspire data-informed change. This panel will present key findings related to food insecurity of military and veteran families throughout the pandemic, engage in a discussion around the causal factors of food insecurity for military and veteran families and provide an overview of proven programmatic responses to food insecurity throughout the military-connected community.

This workshop is designed to complement the keynote to support participants build a daily habit of compassion. Participants will learn the scientific benefits of compassion, and its different building blocks, specifically empathy, joy, and altruism. They will discern the difference between these building blocks using words and felt sense experiences in their own bodies and minds. They will be led in several rounds of loving-kindness and joy exercises that actively support building the muscle of compassion. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect, practice, discuss, and ask questions about compassion alongside real-time experiences of their effect. They will also walk away specific ways they can incorporate the practice of compassion into their daily lives.
