This session will introduce participants to the strategic context for Feeding America’s multi-pronged approach to accelerating enrollment in public benefits like SNAP. Join us to hear key learnings from Feeding America network members regarding strategies to increase SNAP enrollment, advocate for state level improvements to SNAP, and change perceptions of SNAP by growing allies and champions. Although SNAP emergency allotments have come to an end, our responsibility remains as we are fighting to end hunger each day.

Anti-Hunger Policy Conference 2023:
This session will explore ways to use data and storytelling in advocating for systems-level changes. DMARC will present on its Storytellers Roundtable, which involves people with lived experience in advocacy, storytelling, and decision-making at the organization; and its data visualization dashboard, which is used as an advocacy and educational tool. DMARC will discuss its 2022 "Portrait of a Food Pantry Visitor: Data, Demographics, and Disparities" report, which highlights systemic root causes of hunger and food insecurity, including the legacy of racist policies such as redlining. The group will also present on the Iowa Hunger Coalition's "SNAP Map" data tool, which has been used in advocating with legislators against harmful policies targeting SNAP and other public assistance programs.

Co-keynote speakers, Barbie Izquierdo, Founder of I Exist, and Paul Born, Co-CEO of the Tamarack Institute, will explore our theme Voices Igniting Change through stories that recognize the agency and expertise of people with lived and living experience of hunger. Barbie Izquierdo will share insights from her journey as a mother who leveraged her own experience with food insecurity to become a powerful anti-hunger advocate keynoting an address at the White House. Drawing upon his work as a faculty member of the Asset Based Community Development Institute, Paul Born will frame a continuum for authentically engaging people with lived and living experience as partners in our work. Following these remarks, Barbie and Paul will join representatives from the Good Shepherd Food Bank, Board Member Claudette Ndayininahaze and Building Advocates Leadership Program Advocate Rebekah Lane, as they discuss drawing upon their own lived experiences to advance the food bank’s programming, investments, and commitment to equity. Facilitated by Chief Network Officer Kathryn Strickland, speakers will explore key considerations when committing to deeper inclusion and engagement with people facing hunger.
