In this session, our panelists will present and discuss the planning and growth of a grassroots interagency collaboration that connects BIPOC farmers in the Pierce County, Washington area to a primarily BIPOC population. Facing food scarcity in the wake of the pandemic and in the context of increasing resource inequality, some 60,000 people are served per month while the program creates a sustainable model for economic empowerment for all participants, from farm to food bank to family. The program’s successes and challenges will be discussed from a variety of unique perspectives, from a front-line farmer to the lead agency CEO, from a program manager to a policy advocate. The structure, policies and procedures of the Farm to Foodbank to Families (F3) Program of the Making a Difference Foundation, based in Tacoma, Washington, and collaborating agencies will be explored through a racial equity lens as a model for replication in other urban/rural settings.

Kathleen Stress will introduce the Feeding New York State Boundless Collaboration Dairy Research project and discuss how its data-gathering efforts informed Best Practice Sharing of a $1M investment into the acquisition and distribution of dairy products across food bank partners. Using research data collected, four pilot proposals were created to test how barriers can be overcome to efficiently increase dairy distribution. These pilots serve as the Boundless Collaborative team’s foundation to evaluate best approach(s) to create dairy sourcing & distribution models across New York State to meet the needs of our neighbors. These pilot projects include establishing PACT units for rural distribution, coolers and direct delivery, just in time delivery, and Shredding Hunger cheese distribution. From the boundless collaborative teamwork, Feeding New York will share the following data set points: • Initial Dairy Barriers Survey (Sept 2020) as baseline • Milk ordering costs and amounts with each pilot • Partner Agency Survey Data • Equipment Usage • Partner Agency Testimonials • Boundless Collaborative Team Input In the spirit of boundless collaboration, we will also provide a short recap of the Midwest Dairy Symposium-an interactive opportunity for champions across the value chain to build relationships and create solutions to increase our neighbors’ access to dairy products.

The goal of this session is to spark your brainstorming of how you can stretch your current CACFP program to help feed our very youngest, to school age, to the oldest population nutritious and much needed meals. The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan will share their success in providing nearly 420,000 healthy meals a year to children in afterschool, child care, and schools. Through supporting programs and vending the food bank is able to fully utilize their state-of-the-art production kitchen.

Building Relationships between Food Banks and the Dairy Community to increase access to the protein and nutrients provided by milk and dairy products as it relates to long term impact, and our 2025 nutrition strategy. We will highlight food banks and community partnerships that have best practices in place with accessing dairy and serving our clients thru middle and last mile refrigeration capacity infrastructure support. Milk and other fresh dairy products are a source of high-quality protein that’s often in short supply in the FA network of food banks and is the best source of three of the top nutrients most likely to be missing in our client’s diet – calcium, vitamin D and potassium. We are convening community partners to provide inclusive and equitable access to increased dairy nutrition for the people we serve within the Feeding America network.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the critical role that school meals play in supporting student nutrition, health, and academic achievement. As the pandemic hit and schools closed, the U.S. Department of Agriculture allowed schools to serve free meals to all students, regardless of household income.
