The May 2023 meeting’s topic was the importance of Service Insights webpages or portals, and how to use them to maximize the impact of the initiative. The facilitators gave a brief overview and then toured examples of amazing websites to inspire the group or give them ideas to implement themselves.

Anti-Hunger Policy Conference 2023:

 Accurate measures of household costs are critical for addressing poverty and root causes of hunger and food insecurity. Attendees of this session will learn about a true cost of living measure that stands in stark contrast to the outdated Official Poverty Measure (OPM) in that it accounts for location, family composition, and all basic costs of living, from healthcare and housing to childcare and food. Produced by the Center for Women’s Welfare at the University of Washington and sponsored by the United Way of NYC, the NYC True Cost of Living is rooted in methodology used to calculate basic needs in 41 states. Six New York City reports (carrying the name NYC Self-Sufficiency Standard) have been produced since 2000. This report is a valuable advocacy tool to better inform food policies and can be replicated to support municipalities across the nation.

As food banks deepen approaches to improve Food Security and address racial disparities in communities, they are learning that an essential component of the work is understanding the local history and context of the community. This history helped to shape the systems and structures that impact food insecurity. Learning about place-based history allows us to work with community and address these systems while moving forward to challenge them. This is essential as we work to keep people at the center and address racial and geographic disparities. In this session, we will learn how an exploration of the history of a community is impacting the place-based work of Community Accelerator pilot food banks and their local partners. Attendees will explore how understanding the history of place may deepen their partnerships and work with community.

In this interactive keynote, Anu will use his personal and professional trajectory as a human rights lawyer, researcher, and a gay immigrant of color to highlight the role of compassion in embodying and advancing equity in Feeding America’s work. Speaking to the differences between the human emotions of pity, sympathy, empathy, and compassion, he will inform participants about the popular roadblocks to equity and EDI work – shame, blame, and guilt – and the science of how compassion offers a pathway through them. Introducing the practice of various tools that help build compassion, attendees will walk away with an appreciation for our biological imperative and need for compassion and its indispensability in advancing equity within our organizations and communities. Anu will encourage attendees to reflect and ask questions to apply the concepts shared to their personal and professional circumstances.
