On Wednesday, Sept. 8, the USDA will release its annual report that will describe the extent of food insecurity in the U.S., for the first calendar year of the Covid-19 pandemic. Feeding America anticipates that the report may show an overall food insecurity level for 2020 that will be lower than some may expect - comparable to or even lower than in 2019. While anything other than a steep increase in food insecurity in 2020 may seem counterintuitive, both the federal and charitable response to the crisis in 2020 was unprecedented, so this would suggest that the massive public/private partnership to meet the emerging food crisis has been working. To help convey the scope of the charitable sector’s contributions, Feeding America has generated a national estimate of the number of individuals who received charitable food assistance in 2020, and will begin sharing this estimate beginning Wednesday, September 1.

Starting late in 2019 (with disruption due to the pandemic), Feeding America’s Research: Access, Equity & Opportunity; and Strategic Planning teams partnered with the Urban Institute to assess existing measures and help facilitate gathering and synthesizing food bank and neighbor input as part of the development of a Food Access Mmeasurement Framework. The goal of this framework is to provide food banks with a consistent approach to measuring charitable food access in their communities and to provide the high-level outcome measures for the FEED pillar of the FA Outcome Measurement Framework. Please join Feeding America and the Urban Institute for an overview of our progress on this work, including the three key dimensions of charitable food access and measurement approaches (phase 1 of this work which concludes in Sept 2021), as well as plans for developing tools that can support the network in applying these measures (phase 2 of this work which kicks off in Sept 2021).
