Join us for an interactive discussion led by a queer, genderfluid Food Banker and researcher! Food insecurity does not affect all communities equally. Although research has been limited to date, food insecurity has been shown to be more pervasive in the USA among the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, agender, asexual, and Two-Spirit (LGBTQIA2S+) community and among university students. Research shows that 29% of adults, or 2.4 million people, in the LGBTQIA2S+ community in the US experience food insecurity each year. This session will offer an introduction to the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQIA2S+ community, explore a case study of LGBTQIA2S+ university students’ experiences with food access, and propose ways food banks can expand EDI practices. Food banks interested in analyzing place-based environmental factors that affect food access or in sharing best practices, gaps, and recommendations for improving food access for the LGBTQIA2S+ community and/or university students will benefit from this session.
