Hunger is in the spotlight like never before as our communities respond to the COVID-19 crisis, and that has made this year a great time to share your mission and impact in your community with new and existing supporters. But as we move toward recovery, you’ll need to find ways to bridge the gap between the donations you’ve received for immediate needs and the long-term support required to continue to carry out your mission. One approach that can help is called strength-based messaging. It emphasizes focusing not just on the needs that exist in your communities, but also the strengths, power and potential of people facing hunger. As our country continues to respond to COVID-19 and racial injustice, food banks and other nonprofits need to lead the way in how we talk about the people and communities we exist to serve; we need to uplift, empower and inspire.
