How might we enhance the charitable feeding system to better serve our neighbors? What would it look like for us to put people at the center as we make decisions about how to improve access to charitable food? What role might people experiencing food insecurity play in an enhanced charitable feeding system? How would we measure our progress? Over the last year, Feeding America national office staff and food bank network members have partnered with McKinsey & Company to begin to answer these questions. During this session, we’ll share an overview of this project, findings from our research and conversations with people experiencing food insecurity, as well as identified opportunities for our network to enhance experiences for neighbors. Participants will hear from member of the Neighbor Experience project team and working group and will have the opportunity to brainstorm ways that our network might bring the initial concepts to life in communities to improve access to charitable food.

Minnesota Central Kitchen has leveraged partnerships to deliver more than one million fully prepared meals a year to those left behind by current meal programs. They use rescued food and a network of for-profit kitchens and community partners to offer culturally connected meals close to home and employ neighbors. The efforts are growing, as the program is replicated at Channel One Food Bank and two additional Feeding America food banks coming soon. Inter-Faith Food Shuttle seeks strategic partnerships to source fresh, local, and culturally specific foods for its distributions. Through intentional collaborations, its local produce purchasing strategy aims to create safety net purchases for local growers, decrease food waste and create a positive impact for the communities in which it serves. At the heart of the initiative is our unwavering focus on community building community and the overall goal of creating sustainable and strong local food systems. This session offers an introduction to the work, the lessons learned and plans for the future. Food banks contemplating a community-and-equity driven prepared meal program will gain valuable insights. It's also a shining example of how to partner to build a resilient food system by investing in the communities we serve.

Recognizing that food security is also a core economic issue, the NJ Economic Development Authority has earmarked more than $300 million in funds to address these issues head-on.
