During this session, panelists will discuss examples of how food banks have been able to build upon and adapt their existing disaster plans and procedures for use during the current pandemic response. In some instances, food banks have been able use “muscle” developed during previous natural disasters whereas other food banks have been able to develop new capabilities that will serve them well for future non-COVID disasters. The panel will also discuss how efforts to serve communities using an equity, diversity and inclusion focus will continue to influence how we administer disaster relief in the future.

Anti-Hunger Policy Conference 2023:
Campus anti-hunger advocates across the country are working to highlight student food insecurity through student outreach, campaign building, and centering students with lived experience. During this session, attendees will learn more about hunger at colleges and universities and how advocates are pushing for visibility and policy reform to end hunger among students. Speakers will discuss the impact of expanded eligibility during the PHE, best practices to reduce barriers to enrollment, and state and federal policy priorities and strategies. Attendees will also hear from individuals with lived expertise on how they can center student voices in their advocacy.

Anti-Hunger Policy Conference 2023:
Minnesota’s innovative approach to centering food pantry/shelf client voice in anti-hunger work has focused on implementing a statewide client survey every two to three years. Learn more about this process to implement the survey across 286 food shelves using paper and electronic surveys in six different languages, as well as continued efforts to improve the collaborative data collection process. Dig into key insights from unique food shelf client and food shelf manager profiles, highlighting similarities and differences in the data by region of the state, client demographics and food shelf size. As data roll-outs begin in Spring 2023, the focus will shift to support food shelves and the broader sector to inform policy, programmatic and culture change.

Grounded in research, best practice, and food bank experience, this session will address why engaging our neighbors during COVID-19 and beyond is more critical than ever before to effectively address food insecurity across the nation, especially with historically underserved populations. We will discuss food bank status, readiness, and potential paths forward to meaningfully engage our neighbors as stakeholders during COVID and beyond.
